Carrs Farm Bunkhouse is a simple hostel in a converted 17th Century cattle barn. The bunkhouse is set in a working cattle farm in the North Pennines National Landscape. The farm features species rich hay meadows filled with wildflower in the summer, and a decent variety of birdlife as well. The Bunkhouse and the farm are self reliant. Power comes from a wind turbine, heating from a solar thermal panel. These are backed up by a diesel generator ( for those rare entirely still weeks in County Durham) and a logburner with back boiler (for the less rare cloudy days).
Whilst it can feel like the farm is completely isolated and remote, it is in fact only a 20 minute walk or ten minute drive to the middle of the village of Wolsingham, with local shops, and a thirty minute drive to Bishop Auckland for the wonders of the Auckland Project. Other attractions within striking distance are the beauties of Weardale itself, Raby Castle, High Force and Upper Teesdale .
The Bunkhouse can accommodate 21 on bunks ranging three bunks high. Guests are provided with a sheet but must bring the rest of their own bedding. There is a large oven and stove top suitable for cooking for large parties.
