Discover Darlington’s story of engineering, ideas and invention. Darlington’s newly opened and award-winning visitor attraction encompasses North Road Station Museum, Experiment! the immersive experience ride, Wagon Woods the outdoor play park modelled on the Stockton & Darlington Railway, Darlington Locomotive Works and the 1861 Shed where you can view live engineering in action, a café and shop and updated digital and traditional interpretation.
On site you can find Skerne Bridge, the world’s oldest railway bridge still in operation and made famous from being on the back of the five pound note in the 1990s. You can also try the exclusive Black Diamond Ice Cream, named after Locomotion No. 3 Black Diamond, the third locomotive on the S&DR. It’s a black cone, ice cream of your choice, black sprinkles and black wafer. You can only get it here! Hopetown Darlington also hosts a series of exhibitions, festivals, events and activities for all ages throughout the year. Admission is free.
Some exhibitions, events and activities carry a separate charge. Booking is recommended. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-5pm. Also open on bank holiday Mondays and on Mondays during Darlington school holidays.
