Cowshill and Lanehead

The small hamlets of Cowshill and Lanehead, which form part of the parish of Heatherycleugh are situated in Upper Weardale at heights above 1200 feet (380 metres). The land here was very marginal for farming and a living was only made possible by having another income from lead mining. Many of the lead miners’ scattered farmsteads which until a few years ago were empty and derelict are now renovated and occupied offering self catering or bed and breakfast accommodation. The landscape here has a wild beauty, ideal for walking or getting away from stresses of work and urban life.

Killhope Museum Cafe nearby offers daytime meals during their opening hours.

Two places which are highly recommended for a visit are Killhope North of England Lead Mining Museum with its huge water wheel and mine visit, and the little volunteer-run Weardale Museum at Ireshopeburn which bursts with stories from the area.
