Hamsterley
The village lies above the Wear valley by Hamsterley Common. Nearby is Dryderdale Hall, a grade II listed property built in 1872 and which was used as a location for the filming of ‘Get Carter’.
The TV series ‘Time Team’ examined a large stone structure in 2008 in nearby Hamsterley Forest known as ‘The Castles’, with walls five metres thick. It appeared to date from the late Iron Age and may have been an animal enclosure, although the thick walls suggest it was more for defence.
Nearby Hamsterley Forest spreads for 5,000 acres, offering walking, cycling and running trails for all to enjoy.
